A Long Tradition of Education
Education in Northallerton dates back to 1322 with the establishment of the Free School. From its earliest days, the aim was to provide access to education for local children, including those from poorer backgrounds.
The Grammar School and Its Legacy
Over the centuries, the school developed into Northallerton Grammar School, supported by a charitable foundation.
This charity played an important role in supporting education locally, although it became less active in recent years.
Education Through Change
The school evolved alongside national developments in education, including:
- The expansion of schooling in the 19th century
- The introduction of compulsory education
- The transition from grammar school to comprehensive provision
The school relocated in 1909 and built a strong reputation for academic and personal development.
A Modern School Community
Key developments include:
- Transition to comprehensive education in the 1970s
- Renaming to Northallerton College in 1994
- Formation of Northallerton School in 2015
- Joining the Arete Learning Trust in 2019
- Relocation to the Brompton Road site in 2021
The Foundation Today
The Northallerton School Foundation has been re-established from the original charity.
Its purpose remains consistent with its historic roots:
